Cuba Cycling Tour - Cuba Cross Over - Itinerary

This 14 day cycling tour is not only something special for seasoned cyclists but is a great way for anyone who knows how to cycle to discover the marvellous sight of Cuba in an exciting and original way. Your guide will lead you through Central and Western Cuba with the daily routes varying from 10 to 50 kilometres. Our support bus will transport your luggage, and you can hop on whenever you wish to take a break from cycling.

Cuba Cross Over Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Havana

Arrival at the Havana International Airport (optional transfer).

Accommodation: Hotel Habana Libre

Day 2: Havana

After breakfast you will have a meet and greet with your tour guide. Afterwards you will start exploring Havana with a guided city walk. You will visit many interesting sights of “Habana Vieja”, the old part of the city. You will have lunch in a typical local restaurant and in the afternoon you will visit the community project Casa del Tango. Back to the hotel you may plan your evening as you wish.

Day 3: Havana – Viñales

You will be driven to the Viñales Valley. On the journey you will discover tobacco plantations, cave formations and indigenous flora and fauna of unequalled beauty. From the Viñales Valley you will start your first bicycle tour, you will cycle for approximately 20 kilometres and will be able to admire the unique and magnificent landscape. After lunch you will arrive at your hotel, is located in a picturesque valley of “Mogote” hills.

Day 4: Cayo Jutias

In the morning you will set out for Cayo Jutias. The picturesque beach of Cayo Jutías is situated on a little island connected to the mainland by a man-made causeway. The ride will take you past crop fields where the best tobacco in the world grows. At noon you will arrive at the Cayo Jutias where you will have lunch by the beach. In the afternoon you can do as you wish, you can hire a boat or have a swim in the beautiful sea. On the way back you can either take the bus or cycle back to Viñales to the Hotel Rancho San Vicente, where you will be having dinner and spend the night.

Day 5: Viñales – tobacco route

In the morning you will get back on your bicycle and follow a little path which leads through beautiful landscapes and to the “comunidades” (communes) which developed after the revolution. We will stop at ranches (fincas) where some of the best tobacco in the world is produced. We will get to know locals who harvest the tobacco as well as the women who sort the tobacco leaves according to their quality. En route we will refuel ourselves at a local restaurant.

Day 6: Viñales – Cienfuegos

Today’s tour takes us to Cienfuegos, also known as the Perla del Sur. On the way you will visit Parque Guama, a place of natural beauty that is located in the Cienaga de Zapatas. We will take a boat through the Laguna del Tesoro that lies in a picturesque landscape with many water canals, mangrove forests and palms. You may visit a crocodile farm nearby. You will have the opportunity to have lunch in any local restaurant. Then we will go on to Cienfuegos. Located on the central South coast of the island we will explore this charming town by bicycle. You will discover Cienfuegos as a peaceful place with unique and beautiful architecture influenced by the Louisianans. Accommodation at the Hotel Jagua.

Day 7: Cienfuegos – Trinidad

On the way to Trinidad today we cycle at the foot of the mountains of the Sierra del Escambray, Cuba’s second highest mountain range. There are several small inclines but these are very manageable for any cyclist and you will be rewarded by stunning views of fantastic vegetation. When you reach Trinidad you will be able to admire the beauty of the buildings in the Plaza. Later, you will check into your hotel and you can spend the evening at your leisure.

Day 8: Trinidad

In the morning we go sightseeing and explore Trinidad on a guided tour. During a walk through Trinidad we will hear many interesting stories about the "Golden Age” of the sugar boom and its benefits for the city. Spend the rest of the day as you wish. It is worthwhile to take a “coco” mototaxi or a bici-taxi to Playa Ancón, where you can relax, swim or go snorkelling (optional).

Day 9: Trinidad

Today you will cycle to the Valle de los Ingenios. This fertile plateau with surrounded by the hills of the Sierra del Escambray owes its name to slave workers in the sugar mills in the early 19th century. There is a little railway leading to Torre Iznaga, a watchtower originally used to observe the slaves working in the sugarcane fields. If you wish you can climb the 50 metres high tower and enjoy the beautiful view over the sugarcane fields.

Day 10: Trinidad – Santa Clara

Today’s final destination is Santa Clara. But first, our tour takes us through a charming wooded mountain landscape filled with pines and eucalyptuses, mahoganies and magnolias. The cycling paths are a bit rough and steep at times but are manageable by everyone. We take a break in the town of Topes de Collantes - 800 m above sea level - which is renowned for its extra clean air. In the afternoon the tour continues to Santa Clara through a fascinating landscape of outstanding natural beauty.

Day 11: Santa Clara – Varadero

Our cycling trip continues to Varadero (approx. 30 km), located at the Peninsula de Hicacos. There you will find Cuba’s longest white sandy beach with beautiful crystal-clear waters, called Playa Azul.

Day 12: Varadero

Today there is no bicycle tour on our itinerary. You can plan your day as you wish. You could find a quiet beach area to relax, or you could go for a walk to explore Varadero with its various restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping malls.

Day 13: Varadero – Matanzas – Havana

Today’s first destination on your cycle tour is Matanzas, the capital of the province of the same name. Here you will find the fourth largest port for sugar exportation in the whole world. Matanzas is considered one of the most important industrial cities in Cuba. After a break you will continue along the Yumurí Valley to Havana through amazing countryside.

Accommodation: Hotel Habana Libre   Board: Breakfast, evening meal

Day 14: Departure

Today you may either be transferred to the airport for your return flight back home or continue to your connecting hotel (optional).
