In addition to enjoying relaxing or long walks on the wonderful white powder beaches, from April to October you can watch endangered sea turtles make their way ashore to lay their eggs in warm summer nights on the beach of Playa Tortuga. The staff at the Granja de las Tortugas (or as it is now called the Centro de Rescate de Tortugas Marinas) then collect the eggs and cherish the little ones in incubators and basins until they are large enough for a life in freedom.
The neighboring small island of Cayo Iguana is also worth a visit to see the iguanas the island is famous for. Or you can take a ferry to the upstream headland of Playa Sirena, one of the most beautiful beaches of Cayo Largo.
Cayo Largo del Sur Diving Area
The island is a stone's throw from the fish-rich coral reefs that boast a breathtaking diversity of sea animal and plant life. The 50 km wide diving area is both unique and justifiably considered one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. Most dive sites are located on reefs and walls, in a depth of 5.30 metres.
Here you will find yourself diving amongst Venus sea fans, corkscrew anemones and a variety of sponges. There are also numerous animal species living here including hundreds of blue-striped grunts, French grunts, white grunts, bull and nurse sharks, turtles, lobsters, crabs, sea slugs, shrimp, goldentail morays, yellow stingrays, moray eels, perch, barracudas, angelfish and Emperor angelfish.
In addition to your scheduled dives into the underwater animal world there is the opportunity to complete night dives and wreck dives depending on weather conditions and the schedule at the diving centre.
Just a 40 minutes by plane journey separates the lively Havana and the island paradise of Cayo Largo del Sur, one of the most spectacular resort areas of Cuba. At around 38 km2 Cayo Largo is the second largest island of the Canarreos archipelago, second is size only to the Isla de la Juventud, and has a 25km long white beach made almost entirely of sand. The fine-grained white sand beach, crystal clear blue waters and coral reefs teeming with fish bring to mind the Bahamas or the Maldives.
Thanks to its unique dive sites the island has become well-known and is now one of of the most sought-after dive sites for both experienced divers and those who want to master diving.
