Havana's Famous Bars
During this tour of Central Cuba you will have the opportunity to taste world-famous cocktails in Havana in both the "Bodeguita del Medio” and “El Floridita”, two of Ernest Hemingway's favourite drinking spots! At “Bodeguita del Medio” you can enjoy the best Mojitos on the island; a refreshing drink made of lime juice, fresh mint, cane sugar, mineral water and of course, a decent shot of rum. Numerous artists and celebrities have been regulars at the Bodeguita and have immortalized themselves in writing on the bar's walls.
“El Floridita”, also known as the “cradle of the daiquiri”, was another Hemingway hangout which had gained a name long before that as the place where the daiquiri was created. Daiquiri consists of lime juice, sugar syrup and white rum and was Hemingway's tipple of choice here. There is now a life-size bronze statue of Hemingway leaning an elbow on the bar situated at the spot where he once sipped his cocktail. On these Cuba group tours you can re-live the writer's famous motto: "Mi Mojito en La Bodeguita, mi Daiquiri en El Floridita!"
Cienfuegos: World Heritage City
Cienfuegos is also known as the "Pearl of the South“ and is famed for its charm and beauty making it an important part of these Central Cuba group tours. The city is characterised by its impressive buildings and richly decorated facades, which were erected in the 19th century by wealthy French sugar barons who settled in this large Cuban trade port during the boom of the sugar industry. Cienfuegos was connected to the country's main railroad network in 1860, meaning Trinidad - another important sugar trade center - could not compete anymore, leading to Cienfuegos becoming the hub of sugar exportation. During the city tour you will visit the "Teatro Tomás Terry" located at the Parque Martí, which was built in 1889 and is where many world stars, such as Enrico Caruso have sung. Another highlight of the city is the "Palacio del Valle“, an extraordinary building designed in the Moorish architectural style which housed a popular casino in the 1950s. Now it is home to a delicious restaurant where you can try some of the best local cuisine.
Dream Beaches of Varadero
At the end of your Cuba group tours you can soak up the sun during a relaxing stay on the sandy beaches of Varadero, which lie on the Hicacos Peninsula and stretch over some 20 km. In the 19th century, this was a popular holiday resort for wealthy Cuban hacienda owners, it was later discovered by upper-class Americans in the first half of the 20th century. An influx of celebrities and wealthy people, such as the notorious Al Capone, built holiday villas in the area claiming sections of the beach as private property. Varadero's beaches only became accessible to the general public after the Revolution of 1959 when all private land was nationalized. Gradually, a wide range of fine hotels were erected on this famous peninsula, now attracting holiday makers from all social classes. Watersport buffs will fit right in here as there is ample opportunity to go sailing, snorkeling and diving in the vibrant underwater world where numerous impressive coral reefs and colourful marine life are hidden.
