City Tour of Trinidad
A popular highlight on our Cuba self-drive holidays is the city of Trinidad, which was founded in 1514 by Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The wealth that the city gained through sugar and tobacco trade can be evidences today in the impressive mansion houses of former sugar barons from that era. Most of these buildings are situated on the Plaza Mayor and have been turned into museums. Trinidad is characterised by its unique architectural style which features large windows with elaborate wrought-iron grills, installed to protect the inhabitants from pirate attacks. You can learn all about Trinidad's fascinating history in the “Museo Historico Municipal” (formerly known as the “Palacio Cantero”), or simply wander through the narrow cobbled streets soaking up the atmosphere. Finally, you could finish the evening off by dancing to hot Caribbean rhythms in the “Casa de la Musica”.
The Wild Sierra Maestra
On the ninth day of your Cuba self-drive tour you will drive to the majestic Sierra Maestra to admire the wild and untamed natural landscape. The heavily forested mountains jut out of the Caribbean coast, culminating in Cuba's highest peaks and lending a dramatic touch to Eastern Cuba's landscape. In the area's national park, Pico Turquino, you can visit the legendary "Comandancia de la Plata", the former headquarters of Fidel Castro's rebellious troops. You will spend the night amidst the Sierra Maestra, near the beautiful waterfalls of El Salton.
