Travelling your way guarantees an individual holiday off the beaten track. This holiday will lead you from Havana to the tobacco region of Viñales. You will then head to Cienfuegos and Trinidad in Central Cuba. The holiday will end on the eastern side of the island, where you will drop off your hired car and fly from Holguín back to Havana.
Highlights of Cuba On Your Own:
Santiago de Cuba
With our Cuba Your Way Self-Drive Holiday, you will have the chance to explore Santiago de Cuba, Cuba’s second largest city and Havana’s long-time rival; so much so that it is often referred to as Cuba’s “unofficial capital“. The city is truly worth a visit and a real highlight to our Self-Drive Holidays; almost all Cuban music styles were born here and, unlike Havana, it has never been Americanised, so still maintains its tropical flavour. Santiago de Cuba is also steeped in history; opposite the impressive yellow cathedral on Parque Céspedes, located in the heart of the old town, you will find the town hall where Fidel Castro appeared on the balcony to announce the Revolution’s triumph to the thousands of cheering people on 1 January 1959.
Our Cuba Your Way Self-Drive Holiday will take you to the beautifully lush landscapes of Western Cuba. In the heart of the Pinar del Río Province lies the Viñales Valley, which is an absolute must for anyone travelling to the island. You will see the bizarrely formed limestone hills which stand in between the famous fertile plantations that produce the world’s best tobacco. Watch the cigar-makers at work in one of the many tobacco factories, dating back to the 18th century. What many people do not realise is that to make the perfect Havana cigar, there are almost 100 stages, right from the sowing of the seed to the final product. As the Cuban’s say, growing tobacco is like being married to it; it requires a certain skill and your total devotion. West Cuba is a true highlight to all our Cuba holidays!
Havana's old town
Right at the beginning of our Cuba Your Way Self-Drive Holiday, you will have a chance to explore our first highlight; Havana’s old town, founded in 1519 by the Spaniards and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The town has certainly maintained its historical core with many buildings dating back to the 16th century that are well-preserved and gradually being renovated. In the 17th century, Havana was one of the most important trading towns and was the main stop off point for Spanish ships laden with gold and silver. The town fell prey to pirates on several occasions, leading the Spaniards to build large fortresses and ramparts which can still be seen dominating the city landscape today. Visit the Castillo del Morro castle or stroll casually through the Plaza de Armas. There is plenty to do in Havana, and we can guarantee that you will never get bored. At the end of your stay in Havana, you can stop for one of Cuba’s famous cocktails in the legendary “Bodeguita del Medio” or “El Floridita” bars. We also highly recommend paying the “Havana Club” Rum Museum a visit!
