One of the top attractions on this tour is Varadero, a region famous for its magnificent beaches. Anyone touring Cuba by bus should be sure to pay a visit to the colonial city of Trinidad and the unofficial capital, Santiago de Cuba, both on the East Coast of this largest of the Caribbean Islands. On this special Sprachcaffe tour - “Cuba Explorer by Bus” - you will have the chance to experience Cuba intensively for two weeks.
Relaxing in Varadero
Before exploring Cuba by bus, why not relax on the twenty kilometer long, sandy beach of Varadero along the Hicacos peninsula? Water sport buffs can indulge in a number of activities here, including catamaran trips, diving, snorkeling, swimming with dolphins and much more. Those who prefer just to unwind beneath the shade of the palm trees or to soak up the Caribbean sun will feel perfectly relaxed here. As far back as the 19th century, the Cuban landowners were taking holidays in their summer villas on the beaches of Varadero, and enjoying the view of the turquoise blue sea. It was not until after the Revolution of 1959 that the wealthy American owners of private estates, who had settled there in the twentieth century (including the infamous Al Capone), were dispossessed of their property and the Varadero beach was given back for public use. Gradually, a number of attractive hotel complexes were erected on this strip of land. Enjoy the beach paradise of Varadero, an absolute highlight of your bus tour!
Travel Cuba independently and discover the charming city of Trinidad with its characteristic pastel-coloured buildings, numerous plazas and museums. Some say, Trinidad is a museum in itself, as this 500 year old city is so exceptionally well-preserved. Trinidad and the neighbouring Valle de los Ingenios has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1988. The Spanish conqueror Diego Velasquez founded Trindad as Cuba’s third settlement in 1514. The wealth, which the city amassed from the sugar and tobacco trades, is still noticeable today in the magnificent houses and palaces of the former sugar barons in the Plaza Mayor. Go for a stroll on the cobblestoned pavements of the narrow alleys in the old town and become transported back to the colonial times. At night there are numerous options for going out and for dancing to the Caribbean rhythms – for example, in Trinidad´s popular Casa de la Trova or Casa de la Musica!
City Walk in Santiago de Cuba
Another highlight on this bus tour of Cuba is the city of Santiago de Cuba, which is known as Havana's greatest rival and is often referred to as the “Secret Capital of Cuba”. Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city in Cuba and is probably the one with the most Caribbean flair due to its having never been Americanised, unlike Havana. Historically, Santiago has also played a major role, as it was here that Fidel Castro proclaimed the revolution from the balcony of the town hall in the middle of the Cespedes Park, on the 1st of January 1959. Another place worth seeing in Santiago de Cuba is the house of the Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez, who founded the city in 1515. Nature lovers will also be in their element as Santiago is surrounded by spectacular scenery; with a wonderful view of the Sierra Maestra Mountains and the deep blue sea that surrounds them. Travel around Cuba independently on our bus tour and be enchanted by the charm of Santiago de Cuba.
