Excursions from Havana to Las Terrazas
Located approximately 80km west of Havana in the Pinar del Río Province, Las Terrazas dates back to 1971 when it was built as part of a reforestation project. Today, the inhabitants here live off eco-tourism and benefit from the lush paradise rich in flora and fauna and sprinkled with small lakes and rivers. The 5,000 hectares of countryside surrounding the San Juan Lake belong to the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve which has been UNESCO protected since 1984. Not surprisingly, Las Terrazas attracts many day-trippers and is a perfect destination for guided tours through the lush green landscapes. Las Terrazas offers a wide range of walking trails and wonderful views of the Buena Vista Coffee Plantations, making it ideal for keen hikers and nature lovers. A further highlight is the San Juan River that runs down the hillside in a series of waterfalls with pools inviting you to go for a swim. Alternatively, for those seeking the absolute thrill, try a canopy tour through the treetops. .
Las Terrazas is the perfect get-away-from-it-all destination, so a few days here will provide the perfect contrast to the buzzing Havana. With the intense fragrance of the Cuban National Flower, the “Mariposa” (Butterfly Jasmine), you can relax in harmony with nature as you feel yourself drift away from urban life.
