Santiago de Cuba
Former capital of the island, Santiago de Cuba deserves
one detailed visit, that can begin in the Cespedes park
to delight with the impressive row of balconies of the
Velázquez House, the oldest of America. From
here it can be initiated an interesting tour, beginning
in the Heredia street, where we will find many essential
monuments and places like the Trova House, the Cuban
Historical Ambience and the Carnival museums and the
Students House, among others.
The defensive system of the city concentrates its maximum
interest in the Castillo del Morro, with its Piracy
museum. One of the local meeting places is the Pico
street, in whose base is the Tívoli district,
the heart of the carnival. Anyone wishing to deepen
in the Santiago history must approach to the Revolution
seat and the Santa Ifligenia cemetery, catalogued as
a National Monument, with sculptures and mausoleums
considered as a statuary work of art, and where are
the Jose Martí and Jose Antonio Maceo tombs.
In the outskirts of the city are two places of inescapable
visit: the Baconao park, declared as Natural Reserve
of the Biosphere, and the sanctuary of the Cuban patron
saint, the Virgin of the Cooper Charity. Here it’s
also the beautiful and spectacular landscape of Sierra
Maestra, with its great coffee plantations.
The Holguín province, known as "land of
nickel", has its capital in the city of the same
name. It has a beautiful viewpoint over the Mayabe valley.
The most interesting points are the Indo-Cuban Baní
Museum, the Cuernalavaca beach, one of the most beautiful
in Cuba, and the Naranjo bay. The hunting lovers can
get to the Saetía key, place with an abundant
fauna.
