Canarreos Archipelago
350 islands and keys forms a territorial unit with special
statute since the new political division. Cayo Largo
is the main tourist attraction of the archipelago, the
greater extension of the Cuban territory. This small
virgin island is a real zoo where different species
coexist, from birds to turtles, iguanas and crocodiles.
It has more than 25 km of coasts, and the water to an
average temperature of 26ºC throughout the year.
The most inviting beaches are Sirena, Lindamar, Luna,
Tortugas -a place used by these animals (turtles) to
nest-, Los Cocos and Playa Blanca. Isla de la Juventud,
also known as Isle of Pines have a great difference
between the north and the south. In the north, covered
by extensive pine groves, abounds the great prairies
and the kaolin deposits. It’s the part with the
greater population of the island and has two cities
that well deserve a visit: Gerona and La Fe, in addition
to small towns dedicated to the agriculture. The south
remains almost virgin, covered with dense tropical forests
and a population of fishermen.
The main points of interest of the island are the seven
caves of Punta del Este, the Natural Park Julio Antonio
Mella, with a small botanical garden and zoo, in addition
to the dam, the Abra Museum and the Bibijagua beach,
peculiar by its black sand formed by the erosive action
of the sea on marble.
