Tourism
in Cuba
Camagüey
In this province is the famous archipelago formed by
the keys: Coco -that in fact belongs to the neighbouring
province of Ciego de Ávila-, Romano, Guajaba
and Sanibal. The region is fitted by the second bigger
coraline barrier of Latin America.
The city of Camagüey, capital of the province,
is the most medieval of all the Cuban cities by the
layout of its streets. Something in between of winding
and labyrinthine, all ending in seats and squares. This
complicated urban geography was created from fear of
the pirates, being constructed as a true street labyrinth
with exit to small squares for easiest ambushes.
Their houses, with a non palace style, have a central
patio aromatic herbs and the famous tinajones, enormous
vessels used to gather the rain. The region also includes
the bordering provinces of Ciego de Ávila and
Las Tunas.
The province of Ciego de Ávila has marshy coasts,
numerous keys and mangrove swamps, which constitutes
its main tourist attractive. Its main interesting tours
include Cayo Coco, the Turiguanó Island and Laguna
de la Leche. To the south is the Labyrinth of the Twelve
legüas, a small archipelago with numerous keys
and innumerable small barren islands. These do not offer
tourist services, except Caguamas, but it’s necessary
to contract the tour. Other important populations are
Florida and Guáimaro.
