Tourism in Cuba

Cienfuegos

It’s the smallest province of Cuba, and the one with less coastline. It’s the third port in importance of Cuba and first as sugar exporter. Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua fort, erected to defend the city from the pirates, dominates the entrance of its bay. It has a 2 km quay that ends at the main artery of the city, Paseo del Prado, converging with the Avenue of the Cienfuegueros. There’re busts of the most illustrious inhabitants, the Luisa theatre park, the colourful facades and beautiful columns. The Jose Martí park concentrates the most beautiful examples of the architecture of the city, with 19th and early 20th century buildings, considered National Monument.

It turns out inescapable to know the neo-classic style Tomás Ferry theatre, the Ferrer palace -from whose viewpoint there’s an impressive view of the bay of Jagua-, and Punta Gorda, the former aristocratic district with elegant mansions conserved in excellent conditions. Another worthy visit is the Soledad Botanical Garden, 25 km of Cienfuegos, with a rich tropical species collection, like the Royal palm, native of the island.
