La Gran Piedra Day Trip
Our Jeep Tour from Santiago de Cuba to „La Gran Piedra“ takes you eastwards past sugar cane plantations, vast fields of grazing cows and horses as the Sierra Maestra Mountain Range begins to emerge before you. Amidst the lush green vegetation lies the world-renowned Botanical Garden, home to the famous “Paradise Orchid”, as well as a spectacular collection of other orchids, colourful flowers and rare plants. You will have a chance to explore these gardens before the jeep continues your journey on winding and narrow mountain trails. On this tour the jeep will park up and you will be left to walk the last few metres to the foot of one of the world’s largest monoliths , “La Gran Piedra”. This “Big Rock” of unexplained origins is perched on a mountain ridge at a height of 1274 metres, measuring 51 metres long, 25 metres high and 30 metres wide and weighing around 72000 tons. You will then climb the 452 steps to the observation deck where you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the greeny-brown blanket of the Sierra Maestra Mountains stretching across to meet the blue Caribbean Sea. On a clear day, you will also be able to see the coast of Haiti and Jamaica. Once you have admired the views, you will have lunch, which is included in our price. After lunch, you will have time to browse the many souvenir shops where you are sure to find something for everyone! Your tour will then continue to the “La Isabelica” coffee plantation, which was founded by a Frenchman back in colonial times. Technically he remains the owner as the plantations stayed in ruins after a fire in 1875 until they was reopened as a museum in 1961. 32 slaves once worked the land here and during your tour of the plantation, you will see their sleeping quarters. You will also see the coffee drying stations that lie in front of the owner’s mansion, as well as the equipment used by the slaves to remove the pulp from the coffee beans. In the evening you will head back to Santiago de Cuba as you contemplate your experiences at “La Gran Piedra”.
