Highlights of Hiking in Cuba
Bodeguita del Medio & Bar El Floridita
During this walking holiday you will not just be hiking the land but you will also get to taste some of the world-famous beverages of the island! The best place to do this is in the many authentic rum and cocktail bars where Ernest Hemingway used to spend many a rum-fuelled night. At the famous bar, “Bodeguita del Medio” you will get the best Mojito on the island - a refreshing drink made of lime juice, fresh mint, sugar cane, mineral water and of course, a decent shot of rum. Numerous artists and celebrities have been regulars at the Bodeguita and have immortalized themselves here in writings on the bar walls.
Another favourite of Hemingway's is the bar “El Floridita”, also called the “Cradle of the Daiquiri” which is famous for creating this refreshing cocktail consisting of lime juice, sugar syrup and white rum. A life-size bronze statue of Hemingway, leaning with an elbow upon the bar, was erected here in 2003 as a dedication to his memory. The statue is located right at the spot where Hemingway used to sit and sip on his cocktail, true to his motto: "Mi Mojito en La Bodeguita, mi Daiquiri en El Floridita!"
Trekking in the National Park: 'Topes de Collantes'
A more challenging part of your walking holidays in Cuba will involve climbing up “Sendero de Caburni”. This 4 km long nature trail is considered to be the highlight of the region. It is situated only a few km away from Trinidad, in the middle of “Parque Natural Topes de Collantes”. The first part of this extraordinary trail will lead you downhill along coffee plantations and through the dense green of the forest. You will see all sorts of exotic animals here and with some luck, one of these might be the Tocororo, Cuba's national bird whose characteristic singing can be heard far away. Upon arriving at the lowest point of the trail, you will be rewarded with the spectacular view of the 75m waterfall, Salto de Caburni, one of the highest waterfalls in Cuba. You can bathe at the foot of the waterfall enjoying its natural pool and refreshing your body and mind for further trekking. Afterwards, you will head back up the steep return-trail before arriving back at the starting point where you can have a nice cool fruit juice at the bar El Gallo.
Comandancia de La Plata
You should not miss a trip to the famous historical national Park “Pico Turquino” when on walking holidays in Cuba! Fidel Castro, his brother Raul, Che Guevara and further rebels planned and campaigned for the Cuban Revolution here, retreating to the Sierra Maestra after a failed landing at Playa Los Colorades. The trekking trail here is quite demanding, which is one of the reasons why the revolutionaries chose this place to be their hiding spot from Batista’s troops. While here you can see the huts of the rebels, including Fidel Castro's former headquarters. Another site of interest is the Hospital of Che Guevara, where he gave medical treatment to the wounded revolutionaries. On this trip you will be hiking through the stunning landscape of the Sierra Maestra and learning about the most important events in Cuban history.
